In a world where love transcends boundaries, I consider myself fortunate to share my life with an extraordinary partner who bravely navigates the journey of living with type 1 diabetes. As I write these words in the quiet hours of the night, my partner peacefully sleeps, and my thoughts reflect on the profound lessons this shared experience has bestowed upon me.

Living alongside a person with type 1 diabetes has been a masterclass in empathy and understanding.

Witnessing the daily regimen of insulin injections and vigilant blood sugar monitoring has revealed the resilience and determination that defines my partner's character.

Our story began with a candid revelation during a simple meal. My partner, with grace and honesty, shared her diabetes journey as she prepared to administer insulin. In that moment, memories of my grandfather, who battled the same condition, flooded my mind. Questions welled up within me, and though hesitant, I couldn't resist delving into the intricacies of her life with diabetes during that very first date.

Over the past near-decade, I've come to understand that diabetes is not just about managing what goes into one's mouth. It's a lifelong, expensive journey encompassing stress levels, the complexities of food breakdown, and even hormonal fluctuations tied to the menstrual cycle. The staggering price tag attached to this condition, from insulin to routine doctor visits, underscores the challenges faced by many who may struggle to afford essential medications.

Our quest for the right endocrinologist was no small feat, but we weathered it together. Two years ago, a breakthrough brought a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) into our lives. Navigating the intricacies of obtaining it and adapting to its alerts presented new challenges, especially for me as a deaf/hard of hearing person. Yet, it became a shared experience, a new sound to embrace in our journey.

Understanding when to ask questions and when to offer silent support during sugar highs and lows became an art. The mental toll of managing diabetes 24/7 is immense, making it crucial to recognize signs and know how to act in critical situations involving interventions like Glucagon injections or sugar nasal spray.

Beyond the physical aspects, diabetes can be a lonely road for mental health. Finding a community that resonated with my partner's experiences brought unexpected solace.

Events like those hosted by YJMT became beacons of connection, fostering a sense of belonging and shared understanding.

Our journey hasn't been without its difficulties, particularly when contending with insurance dictations, prescription mishaps, and the persistent need to educate well-meaning family members. Yet, the cornerstone of our relationship remains communication and open dialogue.

We confront challenges, fears, and triumphs together, actively participating in diabetes management as a united front.

Our love story refuses to be defined by diabetes; instead, it is marked by an unyielding bond that has transformed this condition from an initial struggle to a beautiful birthmark we've learned to love and embrace. Prioritizing self-care, individually and as a couple, we savor the present, finding joy in life's simple pleasures while acknowledging and navigating the unique challenges posed by diabetes.
